Day 2

Kibera and Embassy

As we woke up today everybody had slept well and were eager to see what was ahead of us. We had basic breakfast at missionary we are staying. At 9 we headed towards the mall to make our daily purchases of snacks and water. Today the traffic wasn't too bad and we arrived to Finnish embassy bit too early. After brief waiting at parking lot we met the Finnish ambassador and had presentation of the work of ambassador and of Finland's development aid for Kenya.

At afternoon we went to visit Kibera the largest slum in the eastern Africa. We all got to see one of the worst areas around the city. Poverty and filthiness of the slum made all of us to think how lucky we are actually as we live in Finland. The experience was describable but as we visited Drug fighters school in the middle of the slum we saw that maybe all hope is not lost. In school perimeter we met local students who had been rescued from the slum around. The school tried to raise these young children out of these horrific conditions by giving them food, shelter and education.

After we had been taken around the school we invited to main square where the students of the school greeted us whit marching show, singing and poems. After this ceremony was our time to donate the money and items that were gathered for school back in Finland. Schools staff and students expressed their gratefulness. The warm welcome that our donation got was surely nice thing to see.

On our way back to the buss we had a rare opportunity to see one of the apartments in the slum from inside. The darkness and bad air quality inside made us realize that conditions inside the apartments are truly awful. The whole visit in the slum gave us an unique chance to experience part of the slum from close distance. Everyone were eager as we headed towards the buss and the missionary where the food waited us whit possibility to have shower after the dusty and exhausting day.
